The Arizona Medal is bestowed upon AIA Arizona members who have advanced the profession of architecture recognizing their outstanding professional achievements and their sense of social responsibility. The nominee’s achievements must be viewed as an advancement of the profession and the socially responsible role that architecture must perform within the greater community.
Each nominee’s work and career will be evaluated with special regard to professional and social integrity and judged based upon their devotion to the art and craft of architecture, design integrity, and desire to better the physical environment. Nominees may be considered upon the basis of notable career accomplishments or upon the basis of a single outstanding achievement.
Jury
The AIA Arizona Fellows Vice Chair will oversee selection of the jury, which will include at least three AIA members from outside of Arizona.

Recognition is given to elected officials, public administrators, or community leaders who contribute to the development of laws, regulations, or policies that affect architecture, or the public's perception of architecture, as an important aspect of our environment and heritage. Advocacy for design excellence in such policies is highly considered, as well as work to nurture public perception and appreciation for design quality.

Recognition is given for building insertions, site installations, furniture, light fixtures, urban kiosks, shade structures, facades, structural elements, or other components, either stand-alone or responsive to a context, that demonstrate design excellence in an element of limited size.
OR
Recognition is given for spaces, zones, processional routes, detail systems, architectural vocabularies, stylistic languages, or other non-physical abstract design systems that demonstrate design excellence.
Project that have previously won an AIA Arizona Distinguished Architecture Award or a Component Design Award cannot be considered.

This category is for built, completed architecture of any project typology and at any scale.
The Distinguished Architecture Award is given for significant achievements in the planning, conception, design, and execution of projects that exhibit these values: sense of place, response to climate, ecological stewardship, materiality, and design quality.
Projects located in Arizona that are submitted for this award will automatically be entered for the Salt River Project (SRP) Sustainable Award as well. The SRP Sustainable Award is given for sustainability innovation in projects that advance a post-carbon world through environmental balance, healthy spaces, as well as conservation of energy, water, material and resources.

This category is for built, completed architecture of any project typology and at any scale completed at least 25 years ago. The building must be located in Arizona, and the building's original architect of record must have been an Arizona-based architect.
Recognition is given to a distinguished work of architecture whose aesthetic statement, craft, and relevance has endured for twenty five years or more, thus withstanding the test of time.

This category is for architecture that not been built or completed.
Recognition is given for important achievements in the execution of commissioned projects that were or are intended for construction but have not been realized. This includes competition entries and urban design projects.

Recognition is given to AIA10 members (those who became licensed architects less than 10 years ago) who show exceptional leadership. All nominees should demonstrate both (1) service to the community and the profession and (2) quality design work as an architecture professional. The jury will recognize that some nominees will have had more emphasis on one aspect compared to another. Therefore, while the application requirements are the same for all applying for this award, nominees may apply based on their area of personal emphasis, or "track." The two tracks are:

• Service to the community and the profession
• Design work as an architecture professional

• Educators of any rank or appointment (including faculty members, administrators, and staff) employed by a NAAB-accredited architecture degree program in Arizona.
• A course, studio, project, or other educational program itself that is a component of a NAAB-accredited degree program in Arizona.

Recognition is given to non-AIA members and organizations that have contributed to a better understanding and awareness of architecture in Arizona, including design advocacy in political, educational, or institutional domains.
Architects and architecture educators are not eligible for this award.
Gary K. Herberger, AIA, was a noted architect, real estate developer, and philanthropist in the Phoenix Area. The award was named for him after his death in 2017.

Recognition is given to an AIA Arizona Architect or Associate member who collaborates with Allied members to advance the profession.

The nomination form has been distributed to all current AIA Arizona Allied members via email. Each Allied individual, whether they are an Allied individual member or part of an Allied Firm membership, can nominate one person (an individual Architect or Associate) each. 

On the form, both the nominator + nominee will write a brief description on how the nominee supports and collaborates with Allieds in bringing architectural projects to market and in advancing the business of practice.

Step one of two: Vote (Allied popular vote)

Each Allied individual, whether they are an Allied individual member or part of an Allied Firm membership, will be able to review the nominations and can cast one vote for a selection. This will narrow to a short list of finalists. 

Step two of two: Jury

Finalist entries will be reviewed by a special Allied Choice jury of 3 Allieds, 1 Architect, and 1 Associate. This jury will select up to one winner per year. The jury may also choose, at its own discretion, that no winner is worthy of selection in a given year.
