Entry fees vary by category—click on the "Guidelines" next to each category to learn more. Click on a category's “Submit” button to begin an entry. You will create a login to proceed.

The deadline is 11:59 p.m. Arizona time, Thursday, July 11, 2024. 

The final extended deadline is July 18, 2024. Entry fees from July 12 through July 18 will incorporate an additional $55 fee per entry.

Entrants from the Southern Arizona chapter in the following four categories—Distinguished Architecture, Interior Architecture, Component Design, and Unbuilt—will enter their projects through this site for both the AIA Arizona (state) Design Awards and the AIA Southern Arizona (chapter) Design Awards.

Implementation of the AIA Framework for Design Excellence is highly recommended (but not required) for entrants in the following three categories: Distinguished Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Unbuilt. The Framework questions are integrated within this entry site—no need to upload a separate spreadsheet for the Framework.

The Arizona Medal is bestowed upon AIA Arizona members who have advanced the profession of architecture recognizing their outstanding professional achievements and their sense of social responsibility. The nominee’s achievements must be viewed as an advancement of the profession and the socially responsible role that architecture must perform within the greater community.
Each nominee’s work and career will be evaluated with special regard to professional and social integrity and judged based upon their devotion to the art and craft of architecture, design integrity, and desire to better the physical environment. Nominees may be considered upon the basis of notable career accomplishments or upon the basis of a single outstanding achievement.
Jury
The AIA Arizona Fellows Vice Chair will oversee selection of the jury, which will include at least three AIA members from outside of Arizona.
Award
At its discretion, the jury may recognize up to one winner per year. The jury may choose to not select a winner.

Recognition is given to elected officials, public administrators, or community leaders who contribute to the development of laws, regulations, or policies that affect architecture, or the public's perception of architecture, as an important aspect of our environment and heritage. Advocacy for design excellence in such policies is highly considered, as well as work to nurture public perception and appreciation for design quality.
Jury
The Executive Committee of AIA Arizona selects Patron Award honorees.

This category is for built, completed work with entries in two areas:
Recognition is given for building insertions, site installations, furniture, light fixtures, urban kiosks, shade structures, facades, structural elements, or other components, either stand-alone or responsive to a context, that demonstrate design excellence in an element of limited size.
OR
Recognition is given for spaces, zones, processional routes, detail systems, architectural vocabularies, stylistic languages, or other non-physical abstract design systems that demonstrate design excellence.
Project that have previously won an AIA Arizona Distinguished Architecture Award or a Component Design Award cannot be considered.
Awards
At its discretion, the Project Jury may recognize as many or as few Honor, Merit, and Citation selections as it would like in this category.

Southern Arizona Chapter members will enter their projects in this category for consideration for both the AIA Arizona (state) Design Awards and the AIA Southern Arizona (chapter) Design Awards. Southern Arizona Chapter members pay an additional $80 fee for this consideration in both awards. A separate jury will review that chapter's submissions in fall 2024.
Qualification
The entry must be from an AIA member (Architect or Associate) in Arizona.
Project completion date must be no earlier than January 2020.

This category is for built, completed architecture of any project typology and at any scale.
The Distinguished Architecture Award is given for significant achievements in the planning, conception, design, and execution of projects that exhibit these values: sense of place, response to climate, ecological stewardship, materiality, and design quality.
Projects located in Arizona that are submitted for this award will automatically be entered for the Salt River Project (SRP) Sustainable Award as well. The SRP Sustainable Award is given for sustainability innovation in projects that advance a post-carbon world through environmental balance, healthy spaces, as well as conservation of energy, water, material and resources.
Awards
At its discretion, the AIA Arizona Design Awards Project Jury may recognize as many or as few Honor, Merit, and Citation selections as it would like in this category.
The separate jury for the Salt River Project Sustainable Design Award may recognize as many or as few projects for this special award.

This category is for built, completed interior projects of any typology and at any scale.
Recognition is given for significant achievements in the planning, conception, design, and execution of interior projects that exhibit these values: sense of place, ecological stewardship, materiality, and design quality.

AIA Framework for Design Excellence
Application of the AIA Framework for Design Excellence is highly encouraged but not required in this category. Questions specific to the Framework are within the online submission form.

This category is for built, completed architecture of any project typology and at any scale completed at least 25 years ago. The building must be located in Arizona, and the building's original architect of record must have been an Arizona-based architect.
Recognition is given to a distinguished work of architecture whose aesthetic statement, craft, and relevance has endured for twenty five years or more, thus withstanding the test of time.
Awards
At its discretion, the Project Jury may recognize one winner per year. The jury may choose to not select a winner.

This category is for architecture that not been built or completed.
Recognition is given for important achievements in the execution of commissioned projects that were or are intended for construction but have not been realized. This includes competition entries and urban design projects.
Awards

This category is for built, completed urban planning and urban design projects at any scale.
Recognition is given for significant achievements in the planning, conception, design, and execution of projects at regional and urban scales that sensitively reinforce historic urban form, connect the internal and surrounding community, exhibit sustainability at a community scale, and respond to context though built form and materials.

At its discretion, the Project Jury may recognize as many or as few Honor, Merit, and Citation selections as it would like in this category.

Recognition is given to AIA10 members (those who became licensed architects less than 10 years ago) who show exceptional leadership. All nominees should demonstrate both (1) service to the community and the profession and (2) quality design work as an architecture professional. The jury will recognize that some nominees will have had more emphasis on one aspect compared to another. Therefore, while the application requirements are the same for all applying for this award, nominees may apply based on their area of personal emphasis, or "track." The two tracks are:

  • Service to the community and the profession
  • Design work as an architecture professional

Award
At its discretion, the Practice Jury may recognize one winner per year. The jury may choose to not select a winner. The winner is eligible for a reimbursement of up to $2,000 for travel to the AIA Leadership Summit if it is held in person within the following year.

Recognition is given to Allied members who have contributed significantly to the profession of architecture through participation in AIA Arizona. Allied members are those in a profession or trade related to architecture (partners, suppliers, services, contractors, and adjacent professions).

Recognition is given to Associate members who display exceptional dedication to the community and built environment through service to the community, to the AIA, and in the quality of work performed professionally.
Award
At its discretion, the Practice Jury may recognize one winner per year. The jury may choose to not select a winner. The winner is eligible for a reimbursement of up to $2,000 for travel to the AIA Leadership Summit if it is held in person in the following year.

Recognition given to a client (individual, company, or public institution) that makes a significant contribution to the quality of the built environment by underwriting, encouraging, and supporting good design. Eligible honorees are individuals, firms, or institutions that have commissioned architectural design in Arizona of any nature, including urban or site planning, buildings, landscapes, or interiors.

Recognition is given for a practice that includes and empowers a community in the conception, design, development, and/or realization of the built environment. Nominees may be individuals (including non-architects), firms, or institutions that have made significant efforts to involve and enable a community in the conception, design, and development of a building, garden, park, or other component of the built environment, whether or not the project was actually built.

Recognition is given for programs, institutions, or individuals who advance the public understanding and appreciation of design in the built environment. Eligible nominees:

  • a program, camp, workshop, website, podcast, video, community event, or other medium.
  • an institution that sponsors, nurtures, or promotes such activity.
  • an individual responsible for delivering such activity, located in or having impact in Arizona.

Recognition is given to consulting individuals or firms that make a significant contribution to the development and realization of good design through innovation, technology, teamwork, and dedication to improving the quality of the built environment. Eligible honorees are individuals and firms from professional fields practicing primarily in consultation with architects, such as civil, electrical, geotechnical, mechanical, or structural engineers; graphic and interior designers; landscape architects; planners and urban designers; and sustainability, specification, and public relations consultants.

Recognition is given to individuals or firms that realize design intent through craft, fabrication, assembly, teamwork, and commitment to the art of architecture. Individuals and/or firms must be duly licensed as contractors by the State of Arizona.

Recognition is given for teaching and/or pedagogical excellence in a course, studio, project, or other educational program. Eligible nominees:

  • Educators of any rank or appointment (including faculty members, administrators, and staff) employed by a NAAB-accredited architecture degree program in Arizona.
  • A course, studio, project, or other educational program itself that is a component of a NAAB-accredited degree program in Arizona.

Recognition is given to educators who demonstrate excellence in architectural education, advance the art and science of teaching design, and transmit to future generations a love of design and a passion for the discipline. Eligible nominees are educators from public or private academic institutions in Arizona, whether in primary, secondary, or collegiate programs.

Recognition given for continuing collaboration in a firm that has produced distinguished architecture for ten or more years, and has made significant contributions to the AIA, the profession, and/or the community. Eligible architecture firms are either:
(1) One in which the principal(s) are AIA Arizona members.
OR
(2) One that has a main, or founding, office within Arizona.
Required
Applicant firms are required to be signatories to the AIA 2030 Commitment.

Past Winners
Past winners of the Firm of the Year Award may apply again for the award after a 15-year waiting period after the win. Therefore, winners of this award through 2009 are eligible to apply again for consideration.

Recognition is given to non-AIA members and organizations that have contributed to a better understanding and awareness of architecture in Arizona, including design advocacy in political, educational, or institutional domains.
Architects and architecture educators are not eligible for this award.
Gary K. Herberger, AIA, was a noted architect, real estate developer, and philanthropist in the Phoenix Area. The award was named for him after his death in 2017.

This category is for built, completed architecture, with a specific nod to the team collaboration.
Recognition is given for collaborative work of an owner/architect/contractor team that produces a project embodying design excellence, exhibiting outstanding craftsmanship, and serving the owner’s functional, financial, and aesthetic mission.

Recognition is given for excellence in research in the built environment that leads to improved design, including pre-design and post-occupancy studies. Entrants will describe the research hypothesis, methodology, experimentation, and results.

Recognition is given to an AIA Arizona Architect or Associate member who collaborates with Allied members to advance the profession.

This award requires nomination by a current AIA Arizona Allied member. [Not an Allied member yet? But you work with a company in the industry that would like to connect with architects? Click here for info on Allied membership.] 

The nomination form has been distributed to all current AIA Arizona Allied members via email. Each Allied individual, whether they are an Allied individual member or part of an Allied Firm membership, can nominate one person (an individual Architect or Associate) each. 

On the form, both the nominator + nominee will write a brief description on how the nominee supports and collaborates with Allieds in bringing architectural projects to market and in advancing the business of practice.

Once all nominations have been received....

Step one of two: Vote (Allied popular vote)

Each Allied individual, whether they are an Allied individual member or part of an Allied Firm membership, will be able to review the nominations and can cast one vote for a selection. This will narrow to a short list of finalists. 

Step two of two: Jury

Finalist entries will be reviewed by a special Allied Choice jury of 3 Allieds, 1 Architect, and 1 Associate. This jury will select up to one winner per year. The jury may also choose, at its own discretion, that no winner is worthy of selection in a given year.
